We will be retiring these old search pages from 1st December 2009. Please use the new site and update your bookmarks. Emailing of results is no longer available from this site - only from the new one.The new site has improved search forms, diacritics and record marking. If you have problems with character display, set your browser to view UTF-8 or switch to ascii display in the results. Journal and keywords lists automatically enter the selected title or word in the form, but you will need to enable Javascript for this to work. Feedback is welcome.More options are available on the full search form The data is (c) RAI and use is permitted for educational non-commercial purposes (including private study). Institutions that make heavy use are expected to contibute towards the costs of data entry. See our statement of terms and conditions of access . Commercial institutions wishing to use Anthropological Index Online are asked to contact the RAI to arrange access. Read the full copyright statement Retrospective conversion: As from 5 March 2001 the searchable data includes a further 140,000 references from the original paper edition of AI. The earliest reference is from 1957. The retrospective conversion has been enabled by grants to the Royal Anthropological Institute from the Getty Foundation, ESRC (UK), the Mellon Trust, the Pilgrim Trust and the Marsh Christian Trust. Instructions Fill in the form above, then click on the "Search the AI" button. Combinations will automatically be combined - So "zeitlyn" in Author and "soothsayer" in title will find a work by one of the anthropologists called Zeitlyn with the word soothsayer in the title. Note that searches are NOT case-sensitive If you select the default option to "match anywhere" then truncation is automatic in the sense that it searches for what you put in - no "*" is necessary, and strings will be found wherever they occur. The pop-up list allows you to restrict searching to find either whole words only or strings at the beginnings or ends of words. The back data contains intials only so authors should be searched for either by plain surname, or by putting initials before the surname i.e. searching for "d zeitlyn" finds works by David Zeitlyn. Note also that the early data has not been fully keyworded. New data will include first names where they are available. Note that the default setting for Authors is "Whole Word". Browsable lists of journal titles and author names will follow. Guidance on boolean searching is also available.
Photocopies are available of most indexed articles for research or
private study from Copies can also be ordered from the British Library Lexicon service - note this is not administered by the RAI.
Note: Museum of Mankind is now the Centre for Anthropology of The British Museum Send us your comments, suggestions and notifications of any errors in the data on the Anthroplogical Index Online or send email to CSAC
